What is muscle activation techniques (Mat)?

Muscle Activation Techniques® (MAT) is a systematic approach used to identify and correct muscle inhibition—a condition where muscles are not able to contract efficiently due to impaired communication with the nervous system.

Rather than chasing symptoms like pain or tightness, MAT focuses on why those symptoms exist in the first place.

Why do We Use muscle testing?

Muscle testing is the foundation of MAT. It allows us to directly evaluate how well your muscles are communicating with your nervous system.

When a muscle tests weak, it does not automatically mean the muscle is “weak” in strength.

It often means the muscle is not being properly activated or recruited by the brain.

This gives us real-time information about:

    •    Which muscles are not functioning properly

    •    Where instability exists in your body

    •    How your nervous system is prioritizing movement

Instead of guessing, muscle testing provides objective, repeatable feedback that guides every step of your care.

the bottom line

MAT is not guesswork.

It is a structured, test-driven system that allows us to identify dysfunction with precision and correct it at its source.

What Does Progress Look Like?

Healing is a journey, and every body responds differently! Success isn’t always immediate 100% relief — even a 30% to 50% improvement is a strong sign that your body is moving in the right direction. We focus on building a steady, lasting foundation so your recovery sticks, allowing these therapies to work together to help you move with confidence.

The Advantage for you as a patient

Most treatments focus on the area that hurts.

MAT is different.

By using muscle testing, we can:

    •    Identify the root cause of dysfunction—not just the symptoms

    •    Pinpoint exactly which muscles need attention

    •    Avoid unnecessary treatments or generalized approaches

    •    Track measurable changes from visit to visit

For you, this means:

    •    More precise care

    •    Faster progress

    •    Greater confidence in your treatment plan

When muscles are not functioning properly, the body compensates. Over time, this can lead to:

    •    Increased stress on joints

    •    Decreased performance

    •    Recurring pain or injury

By restoring proper muscle activation, MAT helps:

    •    Improve stability and control

    •    Enhance performance and efficiency

    •    Reduce unnecessary strain on the body

How muscle activation techniques works

Once a muscle tests inhibited, we apply targeted treatment to the specific attachment points (origin and insertion) of that muscle.

This process:

    1.    Stimulates sensory receptors in the muscle and surrounding tissue

    2.    Sends input back to the nervous system

    3.    Improves the brain’s ability to recognize and activate that muscle

After treatment, we immediately re-test the muscle to confirm improvement.

This creates a feedback loop where:

    •    Assessment → Treatment → Reassessment

    •    Every step is guided by measurable change

why this matters

When muscles are not functioning properly, the body compensates. Over time, this can lead to:

    •    Increased stress on joints

    •    Decreased performance

    •    Recurring pain or injury

By restoring proper muscle activation, MAT helps:

    •    Improve stability and control

    •    Enhance performance and efficiency

    •    Reduce unnecessary strain on the body
